“You do ask a lot of questions,” said the Prefect. “The only way I know to get from this land to the next one is to find the secret passage between the wall. I don’t know how you get from that land to the next, though. They all have their own entry methods. Besides, no one wants to leave the Land of School Dinners.”

"Id no one does, I'm surprised you're not crowded out," Biggles pointed out logically.

"I didn't say they don't leave. I said they don't want to leave," said the Prefect patiently. "We have to make sure that all our visitors who come up the Tree go back home again."

"Don’t all the Lands have that responsibility?" asked Biggles. "How do you make them leave?"

'We have our ways,' the Prefect said mysteriously, and Biggles was suddenly reminded that he was in a Land where magic was commonplace and the people he could see were not human.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Which reminded him that Marie still needed to be found and he asked the Prefect if there was anyone who could help him to search for Marie.

“The Head would be the best person to ask about that,”he said. “He knows everything. I’ll take you all to him now.”

Biggles was happy to go as long with that. Maybe something positive would happen now a grown up was in charge.

The headmaster was tall and thin with a long, pointy nose and purple eyes. He sat with his chin steepled on his hands and said 'hmmm' as Biggles explained their search for Marie.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

“It was rather careless of you to lose her,” he commented with a frown.

“But you haven’t been able to find her. Ergo, she is lost,” pointed out the headmaster with annoying logic.

'She is, and we would like to change her status from 'lost' to 'found,' Biggles repeated patiently. 'Are you able to help us with that?'

'What else can we help with?' Erich shrugged. 'It's the Land of School Dinners. They'll need a large kitchen staff.'

"Kitchen staff?" asked the Headmaster in puzzlement. "We don't have any kitchen staff. Our dinners are made by pure magic."

'Then what can we do for you?' Biggles asked, holding onto his temper with difficulty.

"We don't have kitchen staff, but we do need gardeners to harvest all the crops we need for our dinners," replied the Head in a self-satisfied tone.

"If your dinners are made by pure magic, then why do you need crops?" asked Biggles tersely.

"They're made by magic," the Headmaster said patiently, as if explaining something to a child, "but they're not made from magic. We use only the freshest ingredients here."

'Would you like a hand in the garden for a couple of hours in return for your help in finding Marie?' Biggles asked, trying to pin the headmaster down to a definite agreement.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

The Headmaster pursed his lips and thought. Biggles waited with scarcely concealed impatience.

“Each of you could spend a day in the garden, hoeing, weeding and harvesting, and if the crop is sufficient at the end of the day, then I would give some thought to how I could help you,”the headmaster said craftily.

'Nope.' Biggles rejected this offer without needing to think about it. 'C'mon chaps, we'll find our own way.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
