The Major nodded. 'It's your funeral. I'll send some rations over so you can eat before you go and a scout will escort you over when the land swings close enough. Now, if you'll excuse me, I shall go and see what has been happening in the Land of Pirates. They're good chaps, some of them, but no discipline, you know, no discipline.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

The Major trotted off. True to his word, within a few minutes a Staffordshire Terrier wearing sergeant's stripes appeared, followed by another three uniformed Border Collies all sporting various badges of rank. He barked an order and the small platoon halted smartly in front of Biggles. Each was carrying a covered basket.

The ration packs contained some sort of stew and some hard biscuits. They tasted no better and no worse than any other ration pack Biggles had eaten, although words like 'dog meat' and 'dog's dinner' and 'kibble' kept inserting themselves into Biggles's mind.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

They shoved the ration packs in the rucksacks the Major had also provided. Putting these on required some ingenuity because they were designed for dogs.

At last they were ready. They were escorted to the border where they waited eagerly for the Land of Magicians to finish aligning do they could cross.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

As the group watched, the incoming land swiftly aligned itself with the border. With a shimmer, a puff of greyish smoke, and a strange noise, it stopped and the four suddenly found themselves in the new land.

"How did that happen?" asked Algy, looking around wonderingly.

“Magic,” Biggles replied. “Come on, I think this is the road the Major said we were to follow.”

They followed the yellow brick road to the top of the hill, from where they could see a green town at the bottom. They carried on walking towards it, amazed to find that, despite their eyes telling them it was downhill, their legs were insisting they were still walking uphill.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"It's just like the jolly old Electric Brae in Scotland," Bertie observed mildly.

'The what?' demanded Biggles, pausing. The green buildings didn't seem any closer.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"The Electric Brae, old boy, in Scotland. It's a road that looks like you're going downhill when you're going uphill and vice versa," Bertie explained patiently.

'Why's it called the Electric Brae?' Biggles asked curiously.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"It's really a bit of a misnomer, old boy. An optical illusion. Makes people think cars are rolling uphill, but they're really not," explained Bertie.

Biggles considered this as he continued to stride up a steep slope which looked to be a pleasant downhill. 'What did they call it before electricity?' he asked.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Bertie considered the question, polishing his monocle thoughtfully.

"Bally good question, old boy. I really don't have an answer."

Biggles walked a little further. The green town was no closer. 'Let's take five,' he suggested, turning his back on the town. To his surprise, the town was now behind him.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

In fact, the town now appeared to surround them. They gazed in fascination at the curious architecture. How did one determine what were real doors, wondered Biggles as he gazed at walls adorned with uninterrupted rows of door shaped timber panels, of riotously competing hues, all adjoining one another.

A six legged black cat stalked down the street towards them. Biggles hastily moved out of its way. 'Let's try to find a place where people are. A market place would be ideal.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

They didn’t find a market place. But they did find a huge open air auditorium shaped area. There were stages all around the walls, with small seating areas in front of each. Each stage held various magician’s props.

Biggles heard a gong ring, although he couldn't see one, and suddenly, in twos and threes, an entire crowd materialised.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'
