The corporal returned with the maps which the Major unrolled onto the table in his campaign tent, weighting the corners down with the cups of tea. He studied them carefully.

'It looks like the Land of Rock Festivals is moving in on our right flank and the Land of China Teas on our left. You might get to the Land of Bargains through the Land of Rock Festivals, but it will be pretty noisy. It might be better to wait a few hours as I think the Land of Magicians will be behind it and one of them might know exactly where it is. Risky, though, dealing with Magicians.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

“If you had to choose, which option would you prefer?”Asked Biggles.

The Major drank his tea. 'I think I'd risk the Land of Magicians. It's more dangerous but the chances of getting the right information are much greater. It's the sort of sortie where you ask for volunteers and they might not all come back, though,' he warned.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Just a normal day then," murmured Algy, sotto voce

"If we choose to go through the Land of Magicians, are there any in particular we should be wary of, or avoid?" asked Biggles patiently.

Von Stalhein sat silently sipping his tea and wondering exactly how he had fallen into the middle of this very English fairy tale.

'They are all rather self absorbed,' the major suggested, 'but if you don't offend any most of them they won't bother with you. The Great Gorgonzola is the Big Cheese across there. He has an unsavoury reputation and is best avoided.'

The major's mouth twitched. 'That's exactly the attitude which will get you into the most trouble,' he warned. 'Try and avoid Gloriana, too. She collects redheads.'

"Then it's a good job Ginger's down at the bottom of the tree" Biggles declared.

The Major peered closely at Algy. 'Sorry,' he apologized. 'I could have sworn that you had bright red hair and a moustache. I must still be affected by the smoke which drifted over the border from the Land of Dreams the other day.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Algy flushed. How this ridiculous rumour had been spread, he had no idea, but it was ceasing to be a joke. Biggles placed a restraining hand on him, whilst von Stalhein raised his brows in interest.

Do you have any information on where each magician lives?' Biggles asked. 'Do they live together in a town or on separate estates, for example?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"That sort of intel is very difficult to provide," replied the Major stroking one paw thoughtfully along his chin. "The magicians tend to move around a lot. None of them actually live in the same abode for any length of time. They like to check out one another's magic and they find it's easiest to do that when they take up residence in another magician's home."

'How do they check out each other's magic?' Biggles asked thoughtfully. 'Could we pretend to be magicians?'

The Major broke into a paroxysm of barking, his tail wagging furiously. Algy took this as a sign that the dog was laughing.

ALgy’s assumption was correct. Finally the Major wiped at his eyes with one front paw, hiccuoghed a few times and recovered his composure.

'We've always lost operatives who've tried to go undercover as Magicians,' he explained, 'and you're not supercillious enough by half to pass muster. You might pretend to be the servants of a foreign wizard, but you'd likely trip yourself up by not having the correct gen. Much wiser to represent yourselves as representatives of a foreign power wishing to parley for information and hope that no one you speak to fancies having four new slaves.'

"Slaves? But slavery is illegal," Biggles protrsted but wondered if that was a fate that had befallen Marie.

'Not in the Land of Magicians,' the Major pointed out. 'Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe the Land of Pirates is coming up and we need to man the forward observation posts.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

'What have we got that would interest a magician in bartering information?' Erich asked. 'And how could we threaten one?'

The major stared at Erich. So did the Corporal. "You must be mad," the Major finally ventured.

'We're not threatening anyone,' Biggles said firmly. 'We want to obtain our information and move on to find Marie as fast as possible. There must be something we have or know that a Magician would want.'

"Magicians generally want two things: knowledge and slaves,” said the Major bluntly.

"Well we'll just need to find out if we know anything they don't," Biggles said firmly.
