He flicked his lighter, so they would know he was serious.
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

'The trees are only trying to protect you as the Land prepares to move on,' the Headmaster said sulkily. 'Come to my study.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"What about my friend?" Biggles protested. He's still missing."

The headmaster impatiently waved his cane at the apple trees, which drew back to reveal a dishevelled and annoyed von Stalhein.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Von Stahlein had a lot to say to the Headmaster. An awful lot.

For once the headmaster was rendered speechless, although it was obvious that his indignation was growing.

Biggles intervened hurriedly. "I think it was a communication breakdown," he consoled Erich, "but I think, under the circumstances, the Headmaster might see his way to helping us, as he said he would?"

They reconvened in the study.

'I can give you a certain amount of help in your search,' the headmaster told them. 'No one knows how the Lands move about, but there are certain rules. Two similar lands are never adjacent, so the Land of Bargains will never be next to the PoundLand or The Land of Every Day is Black Friday.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"You do know where The Land of Bargains is, though, don't you?" asked Biggles bluntly.

'Good gracious, no,' frowned the headmaster. 'I know some of the places it isn't, and some of the places it won't be, and no one but one of the High and Mighty Sorcerers would know more than that'.

"If I was to fly up using my balloon, could I see some of the surrounding Lands?" asked Biggles, feeling as if he was either going in circles or being given a right royal run-around.

"Your balloon?" The Headmaster quizzed pointedly.

'My balloon,' confirmed Biggles. 'How do I recognise the Land of Bargains from the air?'

“You cannot fly a balloon in this Land without a balloon pilot’s Flying Licence,” stated the Headmaster rather crossly. “Let me see yours please.”

Now Biggles had his Pilots Licence, which, in the real world, authorised him to fly anything and everything, but he didn't hand it over to the Headmaster.

"Under what authority do you have the right to check on the status of a person's right to fly a balloon?" He asked.

'It is my right as Headmaster of this Land to make and enforce my rules,' the Headmaster hissed. 'Are you questioning my authority?'

"Not at all," Biggles replied, calmly. "I didn't realise it was one of your rules."

The Headmaster glared at him. 'The land to the North of this one is the Land of Talking Animals. They may well have the information you seek. I shall have you escorted to the boundary.' He pressed a bell and a Prefect appeared.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

As the prefect escorted them to the border passage, von Stalhein glanced at Biggles rather speculatively.

“I see it is not just me that you manage to frustrate in your dealings,” he said sardonically.

Biggles grinned. “It’s a talent.”

A large rat dressed in combats was guarding the Talking Animal side of the border. He listened to what the Prefect had to say then let them through.

'If you'd just wait here for a few minutes, sir,' he invited. 'I think you'll need to have a word with the Major.'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

A pugnacious looking British bulldog, dressed in combat fatigues and sporting a major’s pips on his shoulders trotted up.

The Major shouted for a runner. 'Fetch the latest maps,' he ordered the cheetah, who bore the stripes of a corporal. 'May I offer you a spot of tea whilst the maps are collected?'

This was more like it, Biggles thought and accepted the invitation with alacrity.
