'It's a box of broken bits of antiquity,' Biggles protested. 'How can it affect national security?'
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

"Some of the writings have been translated and appear to cast doubt on the lineage of certain members of the governments of ... certain countries. Men who obtained their positions via inheritance."

Biggles raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
"For goodness sake stop that Yankee drawl, or you'll have us all doing it before you've finished."
"OK baby - sorry - I mean, righto."
"That's better."

Raymond didn't answer. Biggles thought he'd never heard a more unlikely story. He started thinking about Greece. It had been independent for about 100 years. Prior to that it had been under Turkish rule for 400 years. Its first king after independence had been Bavarian. What had happened after that?
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

Then he wondered what the real, actual, genuine, fair dinkum, dinky-di origin of these broken bits of antiquity was. Who could possibly be threatened by them? He looked at Raymond thoughtfully. He wasn't buying this load of malarkey.

Money and influence, Biggles thought. And Dickpa. If you stirred all that up together, with a few old artifacts then you got a clue to a bigger treasure. There were plenty of lost, classical treasures which lots of people would like to get their hands on. That was much more likely, Biggles thought.

"I need to speak to Dickpa," he said. "Algy and I will drive down now."

"We'll have to discuss that," returned Raymond. "Sergeants, eh?" he added thoughtfully. "Whose idea was that?"

"Just popped into my head, sir. A bit of nonsense. After all, it's not as if it's ever going to happen, is it?"

"The thought of you two being turned loose in Scotland Yard is well beyond my imagination," agreed Raymond rather drily.

"Now, we need to get that box of bits back," Raymond went on. "Can you tell me anything about the girl at all?"

Both Biggles and Algy went remarkably quiet.

Raymond sighed. "I suppose you'd like me to just let you loose to do your own thing your own way?"

"I'm driving down to see Dickpa," stated Biggles firmly. That curiously disconcerting off-kilter feeling he'd had since they left Merioneth so abruptly had departed and his head was clear again. "Come on, Algy."

"What about my guv'nor?" Algy hesitated.

"We're not pressing charges, are we?" asked Biggles impatiently. "I'm sure the Colonel here will look after him. They're old friends after all."

"Yes, and that's something I didn't know," Algy muttered irritably. "Okay, let go then. Through the back way?"

The two men exited through the back door. "We don't have a car," muttered Algy. "How are we going to drive down to Dickpa's?"

"No," he said, following Biggles' eyes. "That's Raymond's car. You wouldn't!"

'No need,' grinned Biggles. 'There's Jones the taxi. He can take us to Brenden hall Manor.,'

"Who's paying?" Algy wanted to know as he followed Biggles into the waiting vehicle.

'Your gov'ner can cough up for putting us to all this inconvenience. Brendenhall Manor, as fast as you can, Jones.'

"Yessir," replied Jones smartly. The strange music began playing again and before Biggles and Algy could exchange a word, the taxi was crawling up Brendenhall's drive.

Biggles threw Jones a very old-fashioned look. "Yes. I think that'd be a very good idea, Jones," he agreed.

Biggles hammered on the huge, heavy door. "Open up, Dickpa. It's me, Biggles."
