"Ssh, no we won't let them eat you," the nurse soothed, and glared over at Biggles who had laughed at Horace's words.

Biggles thought he recognised Bertie's humour and wondered why Bertie had played such a joke on Horace. He looked forward to finding out the details.
'Major Bigglesworth,' said von Stalhein coldly, 'there are times when I seriously wonder if you were created by the devil just to annoy me.'

He was disappointed to learn the truth.

Disappointed, yet fascinated. He hadn't thought Horace had such a vivid imagination.

Algy, whilst feeling sorry that Horace has injured himself myself was, in one way, relieved. At least being incapacitated, Horace wouldn't be able to fly. But he really wanted to speak to Biggles urgently, and couldn't very well do that with Horace in the next bed. In the end, he got a nurse to agree thst he could take Biggles to the canteen for a cup of tea if he promised not to get him excited.

Biggles promised the nurse that Algy couldn't excite him and was allowed to meet him.

The pair adjourned to the hospital canteen where they could confer in privacy. They were so focused on their impromptu conference that they failed to notice the two other occupants whose attention was definitely completely and avidly focused on Biggles and Algy.

Consuela didn't like living in Inverness. But a revolution had happened in Bolivia and she'd been lucky to escape. She was delighted to see Algy again and told her daughter so.

"The Honourable Algy!" she exclaimed in delight as she arrived at the men's table, daughter reluctantly in tow.

Algy took a few years off the vision in front of him, altered her hairstyle, put her into different clothes and realised he'd had a very lucky escape. It helped that her daughter was the spitting image of Consuela at the same age.

Both men stood up. Or rather, Algy did,and Biggles tried to.

“But you are hurt, Senor,” Consuela’s voice dripped concern. Her daughter wriggled uncomfortably and wondered who these strangers were.

'Only a scratch,' smiled Biggles. Well, it was more of a grimace but he was trying. He wondered if Algy would want to take up with her again after all these years?

"What on earth are you doing here?" Algy asked, when he'd found seats for them all.

“Looking for you,” was the unexpected lie that tripped off her tongue.

"That's not true, Mamma," the daughter blurted out."You said you were looking for Senor Wilkinson."

Biggles sighed. His head began to hurt, but he came straight to the point. "You want a pilot."

'Not just any pilot,' Consuela suggested evasively.

Biggles and Algy exchanged speculative glances.

Then Algy pulled himself together. "Consuela, could you come straight to the point? Biggles was shot yesterday," (or was it the day before, he wondered, he was losing track) "and I've got to find the man who did it. I'm afraid, if you do want someone to fly you somewhere, you really will have to settle for Wilks."

"Mama, do you think the men who were shooting at us, might be the same ones who shot at the Senor, here?" asked Consuela's daughter.

Biggles and Algy exchanged startled glances. "Where were you?" Demanded Biggles imperatively.

Consuela looked even more evasive. "I'm sure it was just a shooting party. No one was really shooting at us." She gave her daughter a warning glance.

"Consuela," Algy spoke sharply, "You must tell us everything you know. This isn't Bolivia. We don't like anyone taking potshots at anyone. And it's not just us involved. There's another branch of Scotland Yard investigating too and if they stumble upon you, they won't go easy on you. Much better to tell us, really it is."
