Re: A Renkell in Time

Interesting. You've gone for the "tail is oval" rather than "rudder is oval" that I went with. Actually, considering that the observer who reported sighting the aircraft at high altitude flitting between clouds would have probably exaggerated the unusual features like the slimness of the rear fusela...

Re: Wanderer's Renkell Bomber/Transport

The Renkell Transport effectively finished. I think its a rather more conservative approach than what WEJ intended, but theoretically it could have flown and had the described performance. The tricycle undercarriage allows the aircraft to sit on its nose without additional ballast but I think its a ...

I look forward to seeing what you come up with. My effort should be finished by the end of the week.

Re: Wanderer's Renkell Bomber/Transport

This is going quicker than I expected. Being a "3d sketch" its no masterpiece, but I think I'm not too far off a practical realisation of WEJ's concept. The camouflage is still a bit bright (the canopy of course needs more work and is on not yet glued in place). The tail planes need to be set well f...

Ditto. If only had a kit for a Short Empire then we could have the whole set from CID!

Re: Biggles Air Police group build 2018/19 discussion.

The only reason why I didn't make the Hunter myself was because I couldn't find a kit at a reasonable price. It would be a very interesting aircraft.

Re: Wanderer's Renkell Bomber/Transport

Fuselage in progress. First sanding complete, which revealed the need for some more filling and strengthening around the fuselage join and some filling of inconsistencies in the tail.

Re: Wanderer's Renkell Bomber/Transport

Now to the fuselage. At this stage just a lot of Tamiya plastic filler that will need to be left a day or two to fully set. The tail fin has been extended with a piece of thin modelling plastic then polyfilled to give it thickness. The original rudder of the FW189 has been rounded to make the rear e...

Re: Wanderer's Renkell Bomber/Transport

Think I have solved the wheel problem. Using two large bomb-halves from the Me410 kit I have made two "wheel blisters" to the inside of each engine nacelle. These to scale are exactly 12 feet apart on their centrelines. With the wheels facing outward they will have the required 4-metre track. The wh...

Wanderer's Renkell Bomber/Transport

Having had some easy fun with the Tiger Moth, now its time for the main event. Of all the fictitious aircraft WEJ created, the Renkell Wulf fighter and its unnamed transport version I find the most fascinating, and certainly one of the best described. We know from the crash description that they are...

Its a very simple little kit that fits together with a minimum of fuss. Je regret the Renkell, when the kits for it arrive, will prove more challenging...

Re: Wanderer's Ethiopian Air Force De Havilland Tiger Moth

Today's progress is ultimately a structurally complete aircraft, except for a broken wing strut for which I am going to have to cobble up a repair once what remains sets, and a proof of the decals (will probably change the font from Lucida to Arial Black). It will be rigged using molten and stretche...

Re: Wanderer's Ethiopian Air Force De Havilland Tiger Moth

It progresses quickly! A simple little kit, and a practice run for my Renkell. 20181205_162632a.jpg First assembly of the interior. Realising that most of the etched metal fittings are for details that won't be visible for a model where the pilots are included, I have held them back for another kit....

Re: Wanderer's Ethiopian Air Force De Havilland Tiger Moth

What could be better than a quick squirt of Trainer Yellow! Internals will be a silver dope (really quite hard to see at this scale) and a natural timber coloured propeller.

Re: Wanderer's Ethiopian Air Force De Havilland Tiger Moth

...I may nevertheless have a bash at a Renkell Fighter. I invisage this as an aircraft of similar configuration as the Messerschmitt Me410 but with a slimmer rear fuselage and a rather novel vertical tail with an "oval" or more accurately half-oval rudder. This I believe I can concoct from the fusel...

Wanderer's Ethiopian Air Force De Havilland Tiger Moth

Repeated from group discussion with some minor edits. I have long considered the Renkells from Sergeant Bigglesworth CID the most fascinating "paper planes" that WEJ created, but totally beyond my ability to do justice to as a model. So I will stick to the same book - one of my all-time favourites -...

Re: Wanderer Flies North Again - The Rockheed Freighter

I don't think I ever posted my "retake" on the Weinkel 12 as a commercial Heinkel 111. So here it is, with the other two for comparison. The "Bluewing Jupiter" would have been rather larger again.
