:toomuchcoffee: Just because I am attending something picturesque today, it is dull, overcast and threatening to rain. I was hoping to get some photos.

William Brown

I have just found 10 re-issues of William books (Richmal Crompton) in a charity shop. They were published in 2001, have the original illustrations, and though I've only flicked through the first chapter of the first book, I don't think they have been Politically Corrected. Print quality is poor, but...

I'm a bit late finding this, so what a treat to read through 3 chapters!

Re: Mount Street Floor Plan

You have done me a great service, FB - thank you! A few years ago, in a junk shop, I saw an example of a ribcage shower in copper. There was no explanation attached. However, by much frowning, I worked out the general idea, but not all of it. I wasn't sure if or how the water was heated, or if you w...

Re: The English School System

My American cousins commented freely on my holding my fork "upside down" when we first met. We had to agree to differ on that one.

Did anyone know the ditty:

"I eat my peas with honey
I've done it all my life
It makes the peas taste funny
But it keeps them on my knife"

Re: The English School System

And, back to the schools thing - years ago I had a boyfriend who said he had been to private school. I knew he hadn't, because of the way he used his cutlery. I didn't mind that, but I never trusted what he said, as, if you'd lie about something like that, what else would you lie about?

Re: The English School System

This may not be a good time to admit that I both possess and use fish knives and forks. (imagine a blushing emoticon here). I actually find it easier. Mr. T., whose background is different, neither does nor wants to, which I don't mind at all. The late Queen Mother famously despised the use of fish ...

Re: What sort of an Honourable is Algy?

I believe the "Captain" was an arrangement with WEJ's publishers to make the early works seem more authentic for his readership. I doubt he used it in everyday life.

Airline pilots in UK are still referred to as "Captain" in their work life, but never when off-duty.

Re: What is the Secret of Biggles

Perfect. I have always liked the way that Biggles was portrayed as an unassuming type, as described above. The sort anyone could identify with. Not a "hero" who is big, strong, good at sport, handsome etc. (those attributes one is either born with or will never have) but the sort of chap who is outs...
